Why We Choose Comfort Colors 1717

The fabric story behind every Blacksunset shirt. When the message matters, the medium matters too.

Every decision at Blacksunset starts with a question: does this serve the message?

That question is why we print on Comfort Colors 1717 garment-dyed cotton. Not because it's the cheapest option (it isn't). Not because it's the fastest to source (it isn't). But because it's the right canvas for what we're trying to say.

What Makes This Fabric Different

The 1717 is a heavyweight tee made from 100% ring-spun cotton. But the magic is in the garment-dyeing process. Instead of dyeing the fabric and then cutting and sewing it, Comfort Colors dyes the completed shirt.

This creates several effects:

Weight

6.1 oz (heavyweight)

Material

100% ring-spun cotton

Fit

Relaxed, boxy

Printed in the USA

Why Weight Matters

At 6.1 ounces, this is a substantial shirt. You feel it. It has presence.

Lightweight tees have their place, but for a statement piece — something you're wearing to say something — weight communicates quality. It says this isn't disposable. This isn't fast fashion. This is something you chose deliberately.

"The shirt should feel as intentional as the message on it."

The Garment-Dyed Difference

Most t-shirts are "piece-dyed" — the fabric is dyed in large rolls before being cut and sewn. It's efficient. It's consistent. It's also kind of boring.

Garment-dyeing is more labor-intensive. The completed shirts are dyed in smaller batches, which means:

It also means slight variations between shirts. Two "White" 1717s might not be identical. For mass-market brands, this is a problem. For us, it's a feature. Each shirt is a little bit its own thing.

Made for Messages

There's a reason vintage band tees are so collectible. It's not just nostalgia — it's because those heavyweight, soft, slightly-faded shirts feel like they mean something. They have history in the fabric.

We wanted that feeling for Blacksunset. When you put on a shirt that says "NEVER." or "Not Here to Explain," it should feel like armor. Comfortable armor. Something that protects and represents you.

The 1717 delivers that. It's substantial without being stiff. Soft without being flimsy. It holds its shape but moves with you. It's the quiet confidence of quality fabric.

Care Instructions

Machine wash cold. Tumble dry low. The shirts will soften further over time. Don't worry about them — they're built to last.

Feel the Difference

Quality fabric. Quality messages. That's the deal.
